I was sent an email by a friend alerting me to the pressing issue of plastic bags. Greenpeace has published an article urging State Governments to ban plastic bags. Many cities in other countries such as India, America, England have banned plastic bags and some countries have already enforced full bans in their country. Rwanda is considered one of the cleanest countries in the world having held the plastic bag ban for a number of years now.
South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and ACT already have successful plastic bag bans in place. It’s time for the four biggest States - Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia - to step up and take plastic bags off the menu for marine life.
30% of the world’s turtles and 90% of seabird species have now ingested plastic debris.
Australians use around 4 billion plastic bags every year - that’s a whopping 10 million or so each day. Clean Up Australia estimates that around 150 million of these end up in our waterways and ocean meaning that plastic bags alone are driving our marine life to extinction.
This is such a desperate situation that needs to be addressed. Luckily, Greenpeace has started a petition to build support that the State Premiers can't ignore. If we can get Mike Baird behind us in this issue then we can save our marine life. So take the thirty seconds to sign the petition and show the government that they need to step up their work and ban plastic bags.
