Today I thought it might be nice to do some research into the world's most sustainable cities.
I have always wondered what it would be like to live in a self-sufficient city where preserving the world is their main goal.
The cities were accessed based on social (people), environmental (planet) and economic (profit) and were then ranked 1 to 50.
So what I found was that the most sustainable cities are predominately European. This does make sense as they have incredible public transport systems and a high awareness of environmental issues.
Something that came as a big shock was that Sydney ranked 11th! I have always thought of Sydney as a relatively unsustainable city and people here certainly don't have a whole lot of consideration for the environment. But none the less, we were ranked not too bad.
In terms of environmentally sustainable the top ten were...
1. Frankfurt
2. Berlin
3. Copenhagen
4. Madrid
5. Rotterdam
6. Amsterdam
7. Singapore
8. Rome
9. Toronto
10. Birmingham
Frankfurt topped all most all sections and after doing a bit of research, I completely know why. Frankfurt pledges to continuously reduces its carbon dioxide emissions by 10% every 5 years resulting in a 50% cut by 2030. This is the sort of initiative that all cities should be taking!!!
The only section for which Sydney was ranked in the top ten was social (people).
It is great to see that we are managing our population well but I would like to see Sydney up there for being environmentally sustainable.
