I recently received an email reminding me of the damage to aquatic life caused by plastic sushi soy sauce bottles.
These tiny pieces of plastic are particularly hazardous because they easily find their way into our oceans and are very attractive to many forms of aquatic life. The lids look convincingly like food especially to fish and birds that are attracted to colour and once digested, begin to poison the creature causing death. The fish part is often mistaken for small fish and commonly eaten by birds and larger fish.
I have come to realise that having a quick sushi roll for lunch can have a huge impact on the world. We are so vague that we don't think twice about our sushi rolls. They are wrapped in plastic, come with multiple plastic soy sauce fishes and are then put in a plastic bag? How can we accept this without even a thought as to where that will all end up?!
I know that I will now be refusing plastic soy sauce fishes and instead bringing my own container of soy sauce or simply going without. Or even better, enjoy having lunch with your family and friends by sitting down and having your lunch without the plastic packaging. Enjoy a family meal knowing that you are helping to protect our oceans and marine life. The same goes for coffee. Why must we constantly be on the move, rushing around? What is so wrong with sitting down at the local cafe and having a coffee in a cup and refusing plastic packaging. Let's see if we can slow down and enjoy the company of our friends and family and protect the future of our earth.
