I am not only a big supporter of sustainability and conservation but am also very concerned about women's rights and education. It is so important that girls are educated because it is women in poor countries who are at home with the children and that is where some of the most important learning time is spent for children. If women are educated, then they can help to educate the world.
I received an email about a little village in India just recently and I was totally overwhelmed. This village is in a very male favoring country and yet they are celebrating the birth of girls in the most incredible and beautiful way.
Every time a girl is born in this village, the village plants 111 trees!
This is an amazing tradition which is celebrating women and also promoting sustainability. They are hoping that every time a girl is born they can contribute to making their world a little but greener. The community and family also create a trust for the girl collecting $500 in US dollars as a 20 year deposit.
I think that this village is setting a wonderful example for the rest of the world and we should definitely think about following their lead. After reading this article I actually wish I was born there and lived there.
