Some very exciting news coming to you today regarding my attempt to become plastic free by July...
I made my very first (fabulous) bottle of home made almond milk!!!
I made my very first (fabulous) bottle of home made almond milk!!!
This was surprisingly easy to make and absolutely delicious. I made 2 cups of almond milk and 1 cup of almond meal from 1 cup of almonds (super efficient right?!). This is especially exciting because I can by almonds in bulk from my local bulk store, The Source Wholefoods, without plastic making this a totally plastic free creation!
While a friend did point out to me that 1 cup of almonds can be quite expensive compared to a carton of store-bought almond milk, I have to question how much of that store-bought milk is actually almonds? Processed milks are far too often filled with additives, chemicals and obscure ingredients that have a negative impact on our health and the health of our planet. While it may be cheap and convenient, I feel much better about drinking milk I have made myself and I know that it is pure almonds and water (no secret ingredients).
It was so lovely to have my muesli with home made almond milk this morning and while, it does taste quite different from the soy milk I usually drink, I think I will come to love it in no time.
If you are feeling a bit adventurous, why don't you give it a go and let me know how you get on. You can find the recipe I used here.
Good luck and happy making!
