How cool!
Los Angeles is painting some of its streets white!
Not only does this look super awesome and brightens the entire neighbourhood, this project will aim to keep LA streets 10 degrees cooler. This small temperature change will prevent many heat related deaths while also keeping streets more comfortable for the community. These new white streets reflect the heat that the traditional black asphalt streets absorb. This along, with planting more trees and utilising solar panels on rooftops, is part of LA's plan to cut the average temperatures by 3 degrees which they seem well on their way to achieving.
These cool city initiatives are springing up all over the world, incorporating new technologies to keep our streets cooler. New York has been experimenting with reflective roofs and Melbourne is currently increasing the tree coverage to create more inviting and comfortable cities.
I think it is so exciting to see that although we are facing a huge issue with climate change, it is also inspiring creative and innovative solutions to reduce our eco-footprints. It is great to see cities stepping up and leading the change in our society and embracing the fact that we need to be moving forward as a global community and not just as individuals. Hopefully we can start to see some changes at a national level- I wonder which country will be the first to put their hand up?
