You're not alone if you had no idea that this existed. In fact, this is the first year it has officially ran.
While Plastic Free July is a well-known event established in Western Australia in 2011, Zero Waste October is the northern hemisphere's reaction to this successful campaign. Designed to fit in with the school program of the northern hemisphere, this new initiative is being promoted by Treehugger as an event that everyone can participate in. The principles are the same, attempt to reduce your eco-footprint for the month of October and this new campaign is specifically aimed at school children who want to make a difference.
I think it is so great that these zero waste initiatives are springing up all over the world and raising awareness about the issues regarding waste and especially single-use plastic. As these campaigns gain momentum, so will change.
To me this seems like the perfect opportunity to suggest a plastic free September. We have July and October so why not an eco-friendly September?
Who's up for a three month challenge? ;)
